What Is Sound?

Once you understand what a sound physically is, everything that follows in music — notes, rhythms, dynamics, instruments — becomes a way of shaping one thing: air in motion.

Everything That Makes Sound Is Vibrating

Stretch a rubber band between two fingers and pluck it. You see a blur, feel a tickle, and hear a faint twang. All three are one event: the band is vibrating, snapping back and forth many times per second.

Every sound in the world starts like this. A piano hammer strikes a string, and the string trembles. A drummer hits a drumhead, and the skin flexes. A singer's vocal cords flutter open and closed. Even a loudspeaker is a flexible cone shaking in precise patterns.

Most musical vibrations are far too fast to see: the A near the middle of the piano trembles 440 times every second. Your eye gives up; your ear is only getting started.

How Sound Travels From a Vibration to Your Brain

What turns a trembling string into sound is the air around it. Each time the string swings, it shoves the air next to it. That push is passed from molecule to molecule and travels outward as a wave, much like ripples spreading when a stone drops into a pond. Nothing flies across the room; each bit of air passes the motion along. In air, this relay moves at about 343 meters per second.

When the wave arrives, it presses on your eardrum, a thin membrane inside your ear. The eardrum vibrates in sympathy, and your brain decodes the pattern as sound. In short: something shakes, the air carries the shake, your ear catches it, your brain interprets it.

Here is the idea that makes this lesson the foundation of the whole course: every musical sound, from a whispered lullaby to a full orchestra chord, can be described with only four properties.

Hearing the Four Properties in Real Music

You already know these properties by ear. Test yourself on three famous sounds.

The opening of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Da-da-da-daaah. Three short notes and one long note: that contrast is pure duration. The whole orchestra playing at full force is intensity.

The first bars of "Für Elise". The melody rocks between two neighboring high notes, far above the left hand's answer. That high-versus-low placement is pitch.

The same melody on piano and on oud. Imagine a tune you love played first on a piano, then on an oud, the pear-shaped lute at the heart of Andalusian music. Same notes, same lengths, same volume, yet you would never confuse the two. That difference is timbre.

Common Mistakes About Sound

"If nothing looks like it is moving, nothing is vibrating." Almost all musical vibrations are far too fast and too small for the eye. If there is sound, something somewhere is shaking.

"High and loud are the same thing." Everyday speech mixes them up, but they are independent dials: a piccolo can play a high note softly, and a bass drum can play a low note thunderously. High and low are pitch; loud and soft are intensity.

"Sound travels through empty space." No air means no relay, so no sound. The roaring explosions of space movies are fiction; a real observer would watch them in silence.
