MusicXML is the standard way notation software exchanges scores. .mxl is simply a zipped MusicXML file. Most computers have nothing installed that can read one, so double-clicking does nothing — you normally need MuseScore, Finale or Sibelius. This page opens it directly in the browser instead, and can hand you back a PDF you can print.

No. The file is unzipped, rendered and played inside the tab, using the same engine that powers the interactive player on this site (only the piano sound samples are downloaded, the first time you press play). Nothing is sent to a server, so unpublished or private work stays private. You can confirm it in your browser's network panel.

Open Key and choose your instrument under “I play…”. The score is rewritten at written pitch for that instrument — up a major 2nd for B♭ clarinet and trumpet, up a major 6th for E♭ alto sax, up a perfect 5th for F horn — with correct key signatures and spelling. Playback still sounds at concert pitch, so it matches a recording. To change the key for a singer, pick the new key in the grid instead; the page shows both key names, for example “E♭ major → F major”.

MusicXML to MIDI, yes: choose MIDI under Export, one track per part, in the key you chose. Opening a MIDI file is not supported: MIDI carries pitches and timing but not the written notation — no key signature, beaming or spelling — so a score drawn from it would be a guess.

Press Space or the play button. Click any bar to start there, or drag across bars to select a passage, then turn on Loop. Tempo slows it down without changing the pitch. Right-click a bar (long-press on a phone) for more, and press ? for every shortcut.
