Definition — Letter note names: Music's second naming system uses the first seven letters of the alphabet — A, B, C, D, E, F, G — one letter for each step of the musical ladder. The letters name exactly the same notes as the solfège syllables: A is la, B is si, C is do, and after G the letters loop back to A.

One Set of Notes, Two Naming Systems

In the previous lesson you met the seven singing syllables — do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si — and heard them loop up and down the keyboard. That was one half of every note's identity. Here is the other half.

In the English-speaking world — and, with one letter's twist covered in the FAQ, the German one — musicians name the very same notes with letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Nothing about the sound changes — not the pitch, not the step between neighbors, not the loop. Only the label on each note is different, the way one city can appear on two maps under two spellings.

You will meet the letters everywhere: in chord symbols above songs, on guitar chord charts, on tuner displays, and in most music apps. A musician who reads both systems moves freely between them all — which is why this course teaches the letters immediately after the syllables.

The Musical Alphabet: A to G, Then A Again

Musicians call these seven letters the musical alphabet, and it is shorter than the one you learned in school: it stops at G. After G there is no H — the next step up is A again, one loop higher, exactly as do returns after si in solfège.

The loop runs in both directions. Climb — A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A — and the letters start over as far up as there are notes. Descend, and you read the alphabet backwards: G, F, E, D, C, B, A, then G again below. Reading the alphabet backwards fluently is a real skill: melodies fall as often as they rise, and naming falling notes means walking from A down to G without hesitating.

La Is A, Do Is C: How the Two Systems Match

Since both systems name the same seven notes, there is a fixed, permanent correspondence between them — not a formula to compute, a match to memorize:

Two anchor pairs unlock the whole table. La is A: the orchestra's tuning note, the A that vibrates four hundred forty times per second, is la — one note, one sound, two names. Do is C: the letter C will soon become your home base on the keyboard and the staff. Fix those two pairs in memory, and every other pair is a short walk of steps away in either direction.

Notice what the table is not: it is not a translation between two different musics. Every key of the piano answers to both of its names at once, always.

Why the Alphabet Starts on La, Not Do

If the two systems name the same notes, why does the letter list not begin on do? The answer is history, and it is older than you might expect: the letters came first.

Around the sixth century — five hundred years before any singing syllable existed — the Roman scholar Boethius was already labeling notes with letters of the alphabet in his treatise on music. Around the year 1000, medieval teaching (the Dialogus de musica, long attributed to Odo of Cluny) settled the system we still use: seven letters, A to G, repeating in a loop. The letter A was pinned to a note near the bottom of the singers' range — the note we now call la.

Only a generation later, around 1025, did Guido of Arezzo build his singing syllables from the hymn « Ut queant laxis », as the previous lesson tells. His first syllable, ut — later renamed do — happened to fall on the note already lettered C, and his sixth syllable, la, fell on the note already lettered A. Nobody designed the two systems to align; they were born independently, five centuries apart, and simply met on the same notes. A is not do because A never had anything to do with do: it was already taken.

Letters around 500, the A-to-G loop around 1000, the syllables around 1025 — the alphabet is the elder system.

Spell Melodies You Already Know

The fastest way to own the letters is to spell music your ear already knows — the same melodies you spelled in syllables last lesson, now in their second spelling.

Ode to Joy — Beethoven. The course's own melody, in letters this time: E E F G · G F E D · C C D E · E D D. Five letters carry the whole phrase (C, D, E, F, G), it climbs to G, and it walks back home to land near C.

Frère Jacques. The round opens with the plainest letter sentence there is: C D E C, C D E C — three steps up from C and back to the ground floor, twice.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. The opening line spells C C G G A A G — and that pair of A's is your tuning note, la, hiding in one of the world's best-known melodies.

Common Mistakes About the Letter Names

"A B C and do re mi are two different sets of notes." They are one set of notes under two labels. A is la every time, C is do every time — in this course's fixed-do convention the match never moves.

"The musical alphabet must start on do." It starts on A = la, for purely historical reasons: the letters were pinned to their notes centuries before do existed. Alphabetical order says nothing about musical importance.

"After G comes H." In the system this course teaches, A returns after G. (One historical exception exists: German-speaking tradition names one note H — see the FAQ.)

"Letters are for advanced players only." The opposite: chord symbols, guitar charts, tuners and most apps speak letters first. You need both systems from your first weeks, which is exactly why they sit side by side at the start of this course.

FAQ

Why does music use only seven letters? Because after seven steps the ladder arrives at a note that sounds like a higher copy of the first, so its name is reused rather than invented. That special distance between two same-named notes is the octave, which gets its own lesson in this chapter. Seven names per loop is all any naming system needs.

Why is A not do? Because the two systems were born independently, about five centuries apart. Notes were being lettered by Boethius around the sixth century, and the A-to-G loop settled around the year 1000 — so when Guido of Arezzo introduced ut, re, mi around 1025, his ut (later do) simply fell on the note already lettered C, and his la fell on the note already lettered A. The mismatch is an accident of history, not a design.

Why do German musicians write H instead of B? Medieval scribes wrote one note in two shapes: a round b and a square b. In German-speaking lands the square form came to be read as the letter H, so the German alphabet runs A, H, C, D, E, F, G, with B kept for the round form — a lowered variant covered in a later lesson. In the English system this course uses, the note is B and there is no H.

Is la always A? In fixed do — the convention of this course and of the Latin tradition — yes: la is the note lettered A, whatever the music. In movable do, the syllables describe each note's role in the current scale, so la can point to different notes. The letters, in both conventions, never move.
